Gynaecomastia
is a word taken from the Greek words meaning “women-like
breasts.”
It can affect one breast or both. There is no doubt that it can cause severe
embarrassment for many men. There is no known cause in the vast majority of these
cases, although certain drugs may be a contributory factor in some.
Thankfully, surgery can now be performed which can alleviate this problem.
Firstly, you should consider whether a diet and exercise regime would help with
the problem. If you are overweight or obese , this could be a reason for the
excess fat. Drugs such as anabolic steroids can also cause gynaecomastia.
The type of surgery used to correct this problem will be determined at your consultation
with the surgeon. It may be possible to use liposuction to achieve a flatter
more natural contour, or in some cases a male breast reduction needs to be performed
to remove not only the excess fat, but also glandular tissue.
The operation is performed under a general anaesthetic and an overnight stay
will be required in our hospital. Occasionally, if only liposuction is used you
may be discharged the same day, and a local anaesthetic with sedation may be
possible.
You will feel bruised and sore after this procedure and you will need to plan
ten to fourteen days off work.
