Dental
Implants
An implant is a titanium post which is placed into the jawbone, where a missing
tooth used to be. Dental implants with their custom-made crowns, look, feel and
function like natural teeth.
Dental implants are the best treatment option if replacement of missing teeth
is needed. They are long-term replacements and don’t use adjacent teeth
as anchors like fixed bridges.
The Dental Implants allow the patient to restore normal masticatory function.
They avoid progressive loss of bone because they are placed in the jaws and act
as dental roots, restoring bone function. Because they integrate with your jawbone,
they help to keep the bone healthy and intact. With conventional dentures, the
bone that previously surrounded the tooth begins to disappear.
Dental implants can be used to give retention to a denture, replace a single
tooth or replace all teeth.
Give retention to a denture
Especially in the lower jaw a full denture can have very little retention. Placement
of 2 implants in the region of the canines and anchorage of the prosthesis to
the implants using press buttons or a Dolder bar (see picture) can solve this
problem. Also in the upper jaw implants can be used for this reason. The minimum
number of implants necessary will be 4 to be able to make a Dolder bar on each
side. In case of 4 implants in the upper jaw we prefer however to make a fix
bridge.
Replace a single tooth
For this procedure, a crown needs to be placed on the implant.
The crown will be custom made by the dental laboratory after
an impression of the implant inside the mouth has been taken
by the dentist.
