Male Genital Surgery: Penis Enlargements
A QUESTION OF SIZE
One of the first questions
we are often asked is “what
is the average size of a mans Penis ?”
The answer to this question varies enormously depending
on the studies you want to believe. However, most seem
to agree broadly that the average human Penis is approximately
4.75 to 5.9 inches in length. A typical girth measurement
is around 4.8 inches when fully erect.
Much of the growth of your Penis happens during
puberty.
Many men are concerned at some point in their
lives about the length of their penis and wonder if they “ measure
up” to what is considered normal. Of course, most
men , even those who are worried about the size of their
Penis , have a perfectly acceptable one and have nothing
at all to worry about. Furthermore, most women have confirmed
in numerous studies that they are more than happy with
the size of their Partners penis. Similar studies however
have indicated that women believe the size of their Partners
penis to be very important in a relationship.
Many men are
not concerned about the length of the erect Penis, but
the length of the penis in the flaccid state. They believe
that they don’t indeed “ measure
up” and that they would be ridiculed in the showers
for example, or the first time they are with a partner
sexually.
It should be remembered that the length of the
flaccid penis is not always an indication of the length
of the erect Penis, in the same way that an erect penis
is not always an indication of the size of the Penis when
flaccid. A small flaccid penis could be quite large on
erection and a large flaccid penis could have a relatively
small size when erect.
What’s more, your Penis will
always look smaller than it actually is when you are looking
down at it. To get an appreciation as to its real size it
should be viewed in a full length mirror.
Measuring your penis
should be done very carefully. It is very easy to get a false
reading and an unfair nasty surprise !. It should be
measured along the top of the penis from the base to the
tip, not on the underside of the penis.
HOW CAN I INCREASE THE SIZE?
By now you have probably read a million and once
ways to enlarge your penis. Pills, potions, lotions, creams,
devices etc have all been dubbed to be the answer to a
small penis. Many of these cures have been proven to be
dubious at best and many the subject of spam emails. The
truth is there is no easy option and Patients should consider
all options very carefully before embarking on any treatment,
and that includes surgery. It may be worth discussing your
concerns with your family Doctor if you can, penis enlargement
surgery should only be considered when you have thought
very carefully, taking into account not only the benefits
but the potential risks and complications too. Our Plastic
Surgeon will discuss all of these with you, of course.
Lets begin by saying that Penis enlargement surgery
has a fairly mixed press. This probably stems from wild
claims being made about how much larger a penis can be
made after surgery. If you are expecting a massive increase
in size, you will not be having any surgery because it
simply cannot be done. Surgery can give you some improvement
but you have to be realistic.
Surgery can be performed to increase
either the length of the penis, the girth , or both. The procedure
is carried out by a Plastic Surgeon with considerable experience
in genital surgery on both men and women. It is performed
under general anesthetic and you will remain in hospital
overnight.
The length of the penis is increased by cutting
the suspensory and fundiform ligaments. This allows a proportion
of the penile shaft tucked inside the body, to be released.
Our Plastic Surgeon uses a special incision called a Z-plasty
to help prevent retraction of the length due to the scar.
Because the incision is in the pubic region there is no
scar on the penis itself. The result is that the penis
also protrudes in a more straight direction giving an appearance
of length gain.
It is important to be realistic about the
potential results as we have already mentioned. Generally,
gains of 2cm or half an inch can be achieved. Larger gains
may well be achieved but no guarantees of post operative
size can ever be given,. The ligaments can be cut and the
rest is largely up to your own anatomy. Be very wary of promises
of huge gains in length, you will end up being only disappointed.
Another role of the suspensory ligament is that
it also controls stability of your penis. Cutting this
ligament can result in an erection with a slightly different
angle. Also, a man may not have complete control over his
penis when in certain sexual positions, for example with
the woman on top. There is usually a bigger gain in the
flaccid state of the penis than in the erect state. For
most men this is exactly what they are looking for since
the penis is bigger anyway when it is erect.
The girth is
increased by taking dermal grafts from the Gluteal fold and
transferred to the shaft of the penis. This generally works
better than the traditional method of fat transfer. The problem
with fat transfer is that the fat can be reabsorbed into
the body, but usually unevenly, giving an unsightly appearance
to the Penis. This does not happen with dermal fat grafts
because the skin stops the fat from being reabsorbed. It
is a more complicated procedure than fat transfer. Both lengthening
and girth increase can be carried out in suitable cases.
You
can also consider trimming the pubic hair around the Penis.
Excessive pubic hair can also make the penis look smaller
than it is. Furthermore, if you are overweight, your pubic
fat pad may also be large making your penis look small. Loose
weight if you need to and this may have a positive effect
visually.
