It is suggested that 25% of white females aged between 35 and 45 and 35%  to 40% of females at age 50 present with female androgenetic alopecia. Female alopecia is caused by an androgentic predisposition of the hair follicle with normal levels or with mild or severe androgen level growth. This type of hair loss is characterized by a diffuse thinning all over the head, unlike the typical male patterned baldness. The hair becomes thinner and shorter resulting in the scalp becoming visible through the hair.

The menopause can also be a contributor to hair loss in women. 20% of women suffer from hair loss as a result of a decrease in female hormones. The testosterone already present at normal levels has a trigger effect on the hair loss. This can have a devastating effect on women resulting in depression and low self esteem, after all, a woman’s hair is her crowning glory.
