The most common cause of hair loss is genetic, where hormones along with hereditary background causes a reclining hairline in both men and women, while less common causes are diet, smoking, medication and cancer treatment to name a few. The process starts with thinning at the crown and continues with a receding hairline throughout life.
With the advent of micro follicular transplant popularly known as a “micro hair transplant”, this helps to create a more natural looking hairline. In this procedure, a strip of hair bearing skin is removed from the scalp and is then dissected gently and transplanted in the recipient area at the site of grafting. This requires a great deal of precision and precaution to compliment the angle of growth, the whole procedure might involve transplantation if up to 1500-200 hair follicles at one time.
Though the medical history of the patient is checked to see any history of infections, bleeding or other problems which might pose as a threat to the surgery, one should be prepared for occasional bleeding or pain which is generally mild in nature and is well controlled by the medication provided.
Post surgery, a dressing is placed on the grafted area, which is generally removed after 7 days. While it is disappointing to see the transplanted hair fall off in the first two weeks, it starts to grow in the next three months. A patient is required to be calm and patient. After 3 months a second surgery might be considered to improve density in that area, and the full result can only be seen after approximately one year, which will then remain and continue throughout their life time.
