BODY MASS INDEX CALCULATOR

Body Mass Index (BMI) refers to the individual’s weight relative to his height. This measure is used to determine how much body fat you have and how healthy you are. To compute your BMI, multiply your height in meters by itself. Then, divide your weight in kilograms by the number you obtained in the first step.

The World Health Organization has classified BMI figures according to a number of divisions. Our facility attends to patients with high BMI and recommends a suitable obesity surgery according to their needs.

BMI less than 19: Underweight
When your BMI score is under 19, this means you are underweight and you’re not a suitable candidate for weight loss surgery.

BMI is 19 to 25
You are within the ideal weight range. You are not a suitable candidate for any form of obesity treatment or surgery.

BMI is 25 to 30
If your BMI is within this range, you are classified as overweight or mildly obese. While the risk to your health is still low at this stage, you want to start monitoring your weight gain. Lifestyle changes such as proper diet and sufficient exercise can help you lose weight and therefore pull your BMI to the normal range.

At this point, it’s still better if you opted for non-surgical weight management procedures. You may consider the gastric balloon. This is inserted through the esophagus, filled with saline, and removed six months later. The program will help you adopt healthier food choices and trim down your portions until you get used to the habit of eating right.

BMI greater than 30
A BMI of more than 30 is classified as moderately obese. This indicates a higher risk for heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, and certain cancers. Being in this condition makes you a suitable candidate for weight loss surgery.

You might want to consider undergoing gastric band surgery. This is a reversible procedure that entails inserting a lap band around the upper part of your stomach to reduce its size. This will result to feeling full after eating a small meal.

BMI greater than 35
This indicates severe obesity, and at this point, you are closer to developing various health problems including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and sleep apnea among others. Gastric banding is suitable for your condition. The procedure is reversible. It simply shrinks your stomach so you are compelled to reduce your food portions.

BMI greater than 40
A score of over 40 indicates morbid obesity and your increased risk for various health problems makes you a definite candidate for weight loss surgery. For morbid obesity treatment, gastric bypass and gastric banding are your options. The surgeon will discuss these two procedures at length and the choice is mainly influenced by other health conditions that you might be experiencing.

BMI greater than 50
With a BMI over 50, you are considered super obese. This is life threatening as there is an extreme risk for developing a number of health problems so you need to address this issue as soon as possible. This makes weight loss surgery a definite option for you.
Gastric bypass and gastric banding are two options that you can consider to jump-start obesity treatment.
