Obesity is an excess of body fat. There
is an established formula to calculate what is considered
a healthy body weight in relation to height. This formula
is called the Body Mass Index (BMI).
The BMI has been formulated to give broad guide lines for the
relationship of body weight on health.
To help you assess if you are obese, we have incorporated a
calculator here on our site. This is for guideline purposes
only, giving results for Ideal, Overweight or Obese – if
in doubt please contact us.
BMI = weight (kg)/height2 (meters)
Calculate Your
BMI by entering you weight & height and clicking
in the Body Mass Index box:
What Your Results Mean:
IDEAL - BMI is between 20 and 25.
OVERWIEGHT - BMI of between 25 to 30.
OBESE - BMI is greater than 30.
As mentioned, this calculator is just a guideline. There
are other indicators of whether a person’s weight is
potentially harmful to health. For example a man is at high
cardiovascular risk (heart disease etc.) if their waist measurement
is greater than 102 cm (about 40") and a woman is at
risk if her waist is greater than 88 cm (about 34.5").
Some of the medical consequences of the obesity include vesicular
hypertension, arterioesclerosis, high Cholesterol, diabetes,
hernia, hip and joint problems breathing problems, skin problems
and higher risk of developing cancer.
In addition, obesity can significantly affect the quality
of a person’s life, meaning they become depressed,
lack self confidence and lack the ability to live life to
the full.
In all, obesity reduces a person’s quality of life,
harms their health and can on average reduce life expectancy
by at least 7 years.
That is why at Mills & Mills Medical we offer
a complete solution to obesity.
