Named because it is a condition affecting
many tennis players, it is a condition where there is inflammation
of the structures of the elbow.
Similarly, golfers have the
same problem. Inflammation occurs in the tendons and muscles
of the forearm. In worst cases, even gripping something fairly
light can cause severe pain.
This pain is due to micro tears in the muscles of the forearm.
Many
sufferers do not require surgery at all, however if rest and
rehabilitation haven't worked, it maybe an option for you to
discuss with our Orthopaedic
Surgeon.
The results of this procedure are generally excellent. The
Surgeon will repair (reattach) the tendon wherever possible.
In some cases we are able to do this using a special instrument
called an arthroscope. I other cases an open incision is required,
or even a combination of the two techniques. At your consultation
our Surgeon will able to explain the best approach for your
particular case. The procedure can be done under local anaesthetic
or general anaesthetic. Once again, our Surgeon will advise
you of the most appropriate anesthetic for you. This may also
have a bearing of whether you can leave the hospital on the
same day as the procedure or perhaps you need to stay for one
night.
After the surgery you may need to consider your activities
carefully, especially if they aggravated your tennis/golfer's
elbow in the first place.
Our surgeon may suggest a period of rehabilitation to strengthen
the muscles and tendons.
Up to 90% of those having surgery regain full use of the elbow
and do not have further pain.
