Trigger finger is a common
name for a condition called stenosing tenosynovitis.
Trigger
finger occurs when there is a snapping sound when opening
or closing the hand. It usually affects the ring, middle or
index finger and instead of a smooth closure of the digits,
the finger snaps closed in an awkward movement.
The condition
is caused by localized swelling of the tendons that assist
the finger in flexing inward towards the palm of the hand.
Although it can be an isolated condition on its own, ther have
been links with Rheumatoid arthritis ,another condition which
causes inflammation of the hand. Patients suffering from this
condition can go on to develop trigger finger.
The surgical procedure for treatment of trigger finger, is
very straightforward. It is performed usually under local anesthetic
on an out Patient basis, this means that no overnight stay
is required.
The Surgeon will cut the sheath that is causing
you the pain and restriction of the tendon.
When the surgery is completed the Patient can expect full recovery
as there is no restriction on the tendon anymore.
Following
a short recuperation period the Surgeon will ensure that you
are using your hand to the fullest extent once more to facilitate
good recovery and movement of the hand.
