To give you some more
information about Liposuction, we feature a recent Q
& A with Dr. Marco Vricella, one of the exceptional
surgeons at Mills & Mills.
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed on both
men & women in Spain. Especially at this time of year, when people begin
to exercise more and improve diet and drinking habits after the festive season,
it becomes clear that some areas of fat still do not seem to go. What is the
solution? Liposuction? To find out more, we spoke with a surgeon who has many
years experience in this procedure.
Q. Why do people have liposuction? Is it to lose weight?
A. Liposuction is the process to remove excess deposits of fat that can
not be shifted through exercise or diet. The fat cells are removed with the use
of a thin metal tube called a cannula, which is inserted under the skin, through
a very small incision. The fats cells are vacuumed out as the cannula is moved
under the skin. Customers who have this operation care about the way they look.
They typically take care of their bodies, but still have fat that they want removed.
Clearly fat removal results in weight loss, but this is not the primary reason
for liposuction. Liposuction is really about sculpting the body and making it
more defined. We remove fat deposits in specific areas, such as the hips or abdomen
that can have dramatic results for clients – they are much more confident
on the beach for example, or enjoy wearing more fitted clothes.
Q. Are there any
alternatives to liposuction, like an abdominoplastia
for example?
A. For sculpting the body there are not really
alternatives. For weight loss, clearly diet and exercise
have a significant impact and we always recommend to
our patients to look at this area of their lives. We
have a specialist dietician who can help.
With regards to an abdominoplastia, this is ideally suited to clients that have
a lot of loose skin on their stomach area that has lost its elasticity. These
clients are less suited to liposuction, as their skin will not be able to effectively
shrink back after the fat removal. With an abdominoplastia we remove excess skin
as well as excess fat, delivering the result the client wants. Sometimes liposuction
can be used in conjunction with an abdominoplastia. We conduct liposuction in
specific areas and then once that has healed, proceed with an abdominoplastia
for maximum results.
When we meet our clients for their free consultations we can go through all the
options and all the possible results. So clients are never confused about the
best procedure for them.
Q. Can liposuction
remove stretch marks after childbirth or cellulite?
A. Liposuction cannot help with stretch marks,
as these are a result of skin that is not elastic.
An abdominoplastia maybe a better option. With regards
to cellulite is a complex condition, but it can be
greatly improved with liposuction.
Q. How much fat
can be removed with liposuction?
A. The quantity of fat removed is not always
the most important issue. It is the aesthetic result
that matters and this comes down to skill and dexterity
of the surgeon. However, broadly speaking the amount
of fat that can be removed varies from surgeon to surgeon
and client to client. On the whole though at Grupo
Médico Mills & Mills, we can remove up to
6 litres of fat in one operation. This really is the
safe maximum for a standard operation. Most clients
require less fat removal than this. If clients require
more, then we need to discuss with them the options
as well as the implications of greater fat removal.
Q. Will clients
suffer any pain afterwards?
A. Pain is complex area of discussion, as all
clients are different. Women tend to have higher pain
thresholds than men, and some people have different
attitudes to pain. With regards to liposuction, it
would be more accurate to talk in terms of discomfort
than pain; and the techniques and skill of the surgeon
can go along way to reduce discomfort. In addition,
we offer pain killers during recovery to make patients
more comfortable. Typically clients feel some discomfort
in the first week, when trying to lie down and sleep,
but all clients say that they are so happy with the
results that this is okay!
Q. I have heard
that there are lots of different types of liposuction.
What do you recommend?
A. The fundamental approach for liposuction
is the same with all the different variants with slightly
different names. The most important factor is the skill
of the surgeon. His or her experience, skill and technique
have the biggest impact on the results, irrespective
of the type of machine used. I would recommend anyone
wanting liposuction to get a free consultation and
talk with the surgeon; see examples of their work and
speak with other clients. If you visit our web site
we have a testimonials section, where clients publish
their experiences – I think this is very powerful
when making a decision to have a procedure.
